Some photos taken of store 0406/8 Harrow prior to it’s closure in 1996. They include the store front on it’s re-opening day in September 1989 after refurbishment, as the store winds down to final closure, and shortly after the store has been completely closed in April 1996.

Store 0011/0 Harlesden

Opening in 1911, store 0011/0 Harlesden was the third store to open in London, following hot on the heels of Brixton and Woolwich.  The store was gradually and significantly cut down in it’s final years, with half the frontage being passed over to Superdrug, and then the remaining salesfloor space cut again with a false wall installed at the back. Sadly, the store closed it’s door for the last time in January 1991. These two pictures show the store frontage as it was after cut down in January 1990 – one year prior to the final closure. At this stage the stores sales were in drastic and fast decline.

Taken in early 1990, one year prior to final closure, with the store already having been cut down to make way for a Superdrug unit.

Store 0745/1 Greenford – Sudbury Hill

A selection of photos taken of the site of the former Woolworths store at 1269 Greenford Road in Sudbury Hill, Middlesex. The unit is currently an Iceland, having been occupied by it’s predecessor Bejam for many after after the Woolworths closure. I understand the store closed in 1974, and I have been unable to locate any photos of it while it was still a Woolworths store. I would love to hear from anyone who may have photos of the Woolworths in Sudbury Hill they may wish to share.

Store 0430/9 West Hendon

This store has the unfortunate history of being amongst the very earliest Woolworths store closures in the UK. It was located at 256/258 West Hendon Broadway. It was closed in 1970 as part of the first wave of closures reluctantly sanctioned by management to fund the costs of decimalisation and the conversion to self service.

The site location lay vacant for many years before being converted into a public house. It was finally run by Wetherspoons until its closure in the late 1990′s. After closure an International Supermarket sign was erected (which remains to this day) but work abruptly stopped and the site has lain vacant for almost 15 years. The site was less than a ten minute walk down the Edgware Road to store 0750/9 located in Hendon, The Hyde. I expect most of West Hendon’s business was transferred to this location until this store itself P1010366 P1010368 P1010370closed in January 1989.

Another long lost Woolworths, this store was located at 43/45 Watford Way. This is close to Hendon Central station on the Northern Line.

In common with it’s sister store at West Hendon, this was one of the 1970 wave of closures reluctantly bought about to finance the huge investments required for Self Service and Decimalisation.

I don’t have a great deal about the history of the store – it would have opened in approx 1930-1931. If anyone has a photo or can fill in some post Woolworths history to date I’d love to hear from you! Unlike West Hendon, this is actually now a Way 2 Save International Supermarket this did actually open!

Another long lost Woolworths site… The former store number 0504/0 Kenton. This was located at 182 Kenton Road, Harrow, Middlesex. It was another of the 1970 original closures to raise cash for decimalisation and self service conversions. It is currently a furniture store, but I have little to no information to it’s history from 1970 to the present day….. Any Woolworths photos or updates on the address history since 504′s closure would be much appreciated!

What happened to 0423/0 Willesden?

This is an intriguing one…. Store 0423/0 (which I believe was a 1974 closure?) was located at 207/211 Church Street Willesden. Visiting this location recently I found the location demolished. It’s all the more interesting as this is the only address in the road to have been demolished (so not part of some major redevelopment then?).

Store 0423/0 Willesden store location .207 – 211 Church Road, Willesden… now demolished. Reason and date unknown.

I’m looking into trying to find out the history of the address, what happened after Woolworths closed and when the building was actually demolished and why. If anyone can help (or has a photo of store 0423 they’d like to share) I’d love to hear from you!

Another Woolworths 1984 store closure was store 0459/7 Golders Green which had opened in approximately 1931. It was located at 152/154 Golders Green Road and is now a book exchange and a fitness centre. It’s noticeable as a former employee that the store performance was likely to have been relatively poor due to it’s high ‘off pitch’ location in relation to the other shopping facilities in the area.
